Jiffy Products expands plug production to the U.S. with VMB Automation

Jiffy Products, a leading company in growing media and substrates, makes plant cultivation easier with its innovative pre-filled plugs. These plugs are ideal for growers and ensure that plants can be transplanted effortlessly.

Our expertise in control technology has supported Jiffy’s growth — not only in the Netherlands, but also in the United States, Spain, and Japan. Thanks to our in-depth knowledge of their machinery, we can provide fast and effective support, both remotely and on-site.

New opportunities in the U.S.

To meet the growing demand for plugs in the United States, Jiffy is opening a new facility in Portland, Oregon. VMB Automation was asked to provide the control systems for this new production line. As a system integrator, we were able to quickly design and implement control solutions for an additional new line. The process knowledge is in-house, and in recent years we’ve completed several expansions at Jiffy’s locations, giving us extensive experience not only in maintaining control systems but also in delivering full-scale upgrades.

The project’s lead time — from start to commissioning — was about one year, partly due to long transport times for machine components. During installation, VMB Automation also installed third-party equipment, which was necessary due to limited knowledge of European control systems at the Portland site. After installation, we performed an I/O check, and our programmer flew in to commission the control system, while the SCADA system implementation was carried out entirely remotely.
